100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution

Dear Friends,

A hundred years ago, yesterday, the people of the Tsarist empire overthrew a vacillating government to protect and extend their first revolution of February 1917. These men and women - such as those above - founded the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). This new state - a state of the workers and peasants - produced a new kind of possibility, that a socialist state could be created and that a socialist society might be possible.

I was in England last week to join in the commemoration of the events of 1917 held by the Marx Memorial Library and the Trades Union Congress

US government pledging $60 million to a southern Saharan military force

Dear Friends,

Following up on the story from the Sahel belt in Africa, where the 'War on Terror' appears to be ready to be ramped up with the US government pledging $60 million to a southern Saharan military force that has its specific aim to attack extremism. As far as my own reporting goes, the story is more complex. It is not clear, as a former US intelligence officer who had done his turn in the Sahel told me, that ISIS killed the four US soldiers. It is as likely that they were killed by smugglers. Nonetheless, rather than tackle the many real challenges that face the Sahel, the US

2017 marks 100 years since arguably one of the most important events in modern history: the Russian Revolution.

Aside from being the first time in history that workers together with peasants and soldiers, lead by Lenin and the Bolsheviks, took power and revolutionized the entirety of Russian society, the revolution had major global implications; from threatening the European ruling class with the spread of revolt across the continent

Dear Friends,

On Sunday, the forces of Chavismo won 17 out of 22 governorships in Venezuela. The signal this sends is important - it showed that the social forces behind the agenda of Chavismo - of Venezuelan socialism - have not been extinguished by the Right's concerted campaign and by the United States (with Trump putting his foot into the race - interfering directly in the elections of Venezuela, something that has the US political system aflutter with allegations of Russian interference). These social forces have also not been exhausted by the

Nguyễn Văn Trỗi

On October 15, 1964, Nguyễn Văn Trỗi was executed by a ring squad.

Nguyễn Văn Trỗi (1940-1964) was a militant in the Việt Minh or the National Liberation Front (NLF). In 1963, the United States escalated its criminal war against the people of Vietnam. The policy of 'strategic hamlets' and 'carpet bombing' destroyed the Vietnamese countryside, but did not break the spirit of the people. Trỗi attempted to blow up a bridge and assassinate the United States Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and the US Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. He was captured in the attempt.

Trỗi was sentenced to
