Demonstration in Delhi by Sudhanva

Dear Friends,

This week, in Kerala and in other parts of India, the Left went out on the streets to fend off a challenge from the fascistic forces - led by the RSS. The Hindu Right's government in Delhi attempted to create mischief in Left-led Kerala, but it was held back by the mobilization of the people. The Left, in this state of 34 million people, built a wall against hatred and intolerance. The picture above, which I love for a million and a half reasons, is taken by Sudhanva (the Managing Editor of LeftWord Books) and is from the demonstration in Delhi.

Divest from the War Machine Summit

Description

CODEPINK invites you to learn with us as we kick off a Divest from the War Machine campaign. Join us and a broad coalition of partner organizations for a day of examining the current state of the war machine (surprise- it’s thriving!) and learning the skills and knowledge necessary to use divestment as a tool to shine a critical light on the weapons producers that supply and profit from deadly hyper-militarism both at home and abroad.

Protest in Casablanca

[Glad to welcome Ghassan Koumiya, a young scholar, to my blog. For some background about what Ghassan writes, you can see my diary of travels earlier this year through Morocco - including in the Rif - published in The Hindu]

On October 8, thousands of people flooded the streets of Casablanca to protest against the Moroccan regime’s fierce crackdown on peaceful protests in the Rif region (in the north of Morocco).

50 Años Como El Che

Dear Friends,

I am coming to you early this week because today is an important day - the 50th anniversary of the murder of Ernesto 'Che' Guevara in the little town of La Higuera, Bolivia. Near where Che was killed sits a statue, erected in 1997, which is said to be the shrine of Santo Ernesto, as the local townspeople call him (see below). The town has become a shrine not only to Che, but to the industry around Che - the cult of the martyr, the commodities to be sold. It would disgust Che. But then he would have to realize that for many people he stood for something. This celebration is

Socialist Writing Workshops

Dear Friends,

Thanks to Sudhanva Deshpande, I've been doing a series of socialist writing workshops across India - from Delhi, at Studio Safdar (see above), to Bengaluru to Mumbai to Chennai to Kolkata. Next year, we hope to take our LeftWord Books caravan on the road across Kerala and perhaps to Hyderabad.

After last summer's set of workshops, Mark Nowak of the Worker Writers School in New York interviewed me about the 'essentials of socialist writing', which was published in Jacobin magazine. After this summer's workshops, Mark wondered if we should continue our discussion. There was a

Lluís Companys - The Last President of Catalonia

Dmytriy Kovalevich

Lluís Companys (1882-1940) was a lawyer and leader of the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC). Exiled after the war, he was captured and handed over by the Gestapo to the Spanish dictatorship of Francisco Franco, who had him executed by firing squad in 1940. Companys is the only incumbent democratically elected president in European history to have been executed.

Companys was a long-standing adherent of the Catalan cause. He was proclaimed the mayor of Barcelona in the 1931 local elections. Companys ordered the
